Sometimes you have to sit in front of the TV and cry a little. You know this and that’s why you watch Grey’s Anatomy. You know it, that’s why you watch football. It’s not a gender thing. Crying is good for health and soul, but in the genre called “girl series” it is also one of the desired and central goals of the work itself. It is not easy to produce a tear-jerking drama and the truly successful ones are few and far between, so when a work like this comes along it is a celebration. Well, “From Scratch” that came out on Netflix this weekend is reason for a quality tear party with friends or alone, just prepare a small mountain of tissue packs.

What makes “From Scratch” such an impressive success is that it is based on a true story, and more precisely on the autobiographical memoir of Tamby Locke, an American actress who you have seen in dozens of series and movies in small and medium roles. The book became a bestseller in 2019, Reese Witherspoon acquired the rights to the adaptation, Netflix closed a co-production deal for spectacular filming and oozing romance in Italy, Luke received a producer’s credit, her sister was appointed as showrunner, Zoe Saldana (Gomorrah in the “Avengers” series and star of “Avatar” “) was cast in the lead role and attached as a senior producer, and the female celebration was launched.

The series unfolds the love story of a young artist from Los Angeles who studies in Italy (Zoe Saldana), meets a handsome young chef (Euginho Mastrandrea), they fall in love and build a life together in LA and then – tragedy. And the successful couple has to face it together. And it’s not fair. And it’s sad. And you need good wine and half a kilo of ice cream to cope with the viewing. And in the seventh episode, as the reviews suggest, all of our hearts will break and we will flood the living room with tears. There is nothing here that we haven’t seen before from this kind of melodramas, but we never get tired of beautiful and sad love stories. It’s going to be a good cry.
