Until a few years ago, it was a very common practice to have to show your ID when paying for a purchase with a debit or credit card in a store. Thus, they ensured that the owner of the card was really him, reducing the risk of theft.
But in recent times, with the spread of chip and pin cards, this practice has fallen out of favor. And even more so with the appearance of contactless technology, which no longer requires a PIN for payments that do not exceed 50 euros. In this way, it is possible to carry out transactions more quickly and efficiently.
In fact, the Bank of Spain has published an article in which he admits that “it is no longer clear” if it is mandatory to show the ID when paying with a card if they require it in a store. In any case, the organism implies that, in case they ask you, you must teach it.
“There are establishments that maintain the custom of asking for identification because they consider it an extra security measure. If the client does not have an ID for any reason (loss or theft), it would be possible to prove the identity with the passport or with the driver’s license and the establishment could not refuse to accept payment by card, “he explains in the Bank of Spain.
Having said that, the agency asks citizens to calm down when paying by card and recommends that they take their time: “Remember that asking for the DNI only increases the security of the operation, that you have the right to request a copy of the transaction and, in addition, we recommend that you check carefully that the amount entered in the dataphone is correct.”
