What’s on tonight: The closest we’ll get to Idris Elba as James Bond

by time news

Idris Elba is one of the best things that happened to humanity in the 21st century, no less. The man we all knew first as the legendary String Bell from “Undercover” has also stayed around to have fun in the Marvel universe as Heimdall and now also in the DC universe as Bloodsport, along the way also a host of much more serious roles (like a crazy role as Genie B 3000 years of longing”). But in his resume there is one hole in the shape of a gun barrel through which you can see a silhouette – in short, contrary to all the pleas of the fans, at this stage it is already clear that Idris Elba will not play James Bond. Daniel Craig vacated the role when Alba was already 50 – and that is not an age to enter a long film series.

So he won’t be James Bond. But he did give us five seasons (in nine years) as the British detective John Luthor, and it wasn’t exactly close but it was very good as well. He’s gone a little less beaten and solved a little more mysteries than James Bond, and while he’s never saved the world, he’s totally caught a few serial killers, which is similarly stressful if in a different way. And now a format change is coming for Luther in the form of a movie released on Netflix, called Luther: The Fallen Sun, which begins with Luther escaping from prison (which he entered at the end of the last season of the series – let’s go, long story, but it’s clear that he wouldn’t have stayed there for long ) and from there the situation only escalates.

What’s more, it’s worth noting that The Fallen Sun has much more action than regular “Luthor” episodes. To tell you that this is James Bond-level action? We won’t say it, but it’s great action – there are shots, there are chases, and it’s true that this whole section mostly makes you mentally hungry to somehow get caught up in a parallel universe where Idris Elba was indeed James Bond – but it also completely stands on its own. Besides, we won’t spoil the ending for you, but it’s possible that the series also accepted the fact that Alba will no longer be Bond and decided to arrange a small compensation for him in the form of something in the future. Alba, meanwhile, already hopes that a film series is the new direction of John Luther’s plots. We are totally with him.
