What’s on tonight: the Israeli director we love so much is going to Hollywood

by time news

We have been following Aharon Keshels for years. From his days as a sharp-tongued film critic to the beautiful turn of becoming a director of Israeli genre films (something that may sound logical today, but back then – there were no Israeli genre films). But we didn’t expect the beautiful twist in the form of him becoming an international director – although we certainly hoped.

But the impressive success of “Who’s Afraid of the Bad Wolf” from 2013, which he created together with Navot Papushdo, was a leap to surprising places – first of all, the right to direct in America. Second of all, the right to leave the genre framework in which he has been working so far towards the new adventure in the form of “South of Heaven” a romantic crime thriller, which is a surprising combination of genres as only a film critic can produce. And what’s more, as an American director (even if in indie circles, which is a plus) he can also work with American actors that we like, for example Jason Sudekis (Led Ted Lasso) and Evangeline Lilly.

The film follows Jimmy Ray, a parolee who insists on giving Annie, his dying childhood sweetheart, a wonderful last year together. The crime, of course, pursues him and as we know Keschels’ other works, everything is much deeper than it seems, and it also looks beautiful on the way. Proud of you, dear Aaron. Make a name for yourself in this Hollywood of yours.
