Bloemfontein: English pacer Jofra Archer failed to shine in his return to international cricket after injury. Archer conceded 81 runs in 10 overs in the first ODI against South Africa. This is Archer’s worst performance in ODI career. Archer conceded 20 runs in an over for the first time in his career. Archer could only get the wicket of Wayne Parnell, who came out in the seventh over. This was Archer’s first appearance for England since March 2021. Archer, who used to be a nightmare pacer for the opponents, has succumbed in this way.
Jofra Archer underwent four surgeries over a period of 15 months to regain his fitness. The star injured his finger in 2021 and later underwent treatment for his elbow and back. The elbow required two surgeries. On his return to franchise cricket after an earlier injury, Jofra Archer shone with three wickets for 27 runs in four overs. Archer’s brilliant performance was for MI Cape Town against Pall Royals in the South African Twenty20 League. But the international comeback has been a big disappointment for Archer.
South Africa won the first ODI against England by 27 runs. Despite opener Jason Roy’s brilliant century, England was losing. Chasing the target of 299 runs set by South Africa, England were bowled out for 271 runs. England were bowled by Antich Norkia who took 4 wickets and Sisanda Magala who took three wickets. England’s top scorer is Jason Roy who scored 113 runs off 91 balls. Rassie van der Dussen scored 111 off 117 balls and David Miller 53 off 56 balls for South Africa as Archer struggled. Sam Curran took three wickets for 35 runs in 9 overs for England. Archer bowled 2 no balls and 3 wides while conceding 81 runs.
