Moscow – Russia has fined foreign IT platforms including WhatsApp and Snapchat. This is after it refused to store the personal information of Russian users on its own servers in Russia. A court in Moscow ordered WhatsApp to pay 1.8 crore rubles (about Rs 2.4 crore) and Snapchat to pay 10 lakh rubles (Rs 13.3 lakh). Dating app Tinder has been fined 20 lakh rubles (Rs 26.6 lakh).

WhatsApp was fined last year for the same reason. Russia has imposed restrictions on Facebook and Instagram, the platforms owned by WhatsApp’s parent company Meta, since the start of the Ukraine war.
