WhatsApp Launches Optional Parental Controls for Teen Accounts

WhatsApp has introduced optional parental controls for teen accounts, giving families flexible oversight tools for privacy, group activity, Channels, Status, and Meta AI while keeping personal conversations protected by end-to-end encryption.

Messaging platform WhatsApp has introduced new parental controls for teenagers, expanding oversight options following the earlier release of parent-managed accounts for pre-teens. The tools are optional and designed to be configured by parents and teenagers together, aiming to support open household conversations regarding online safety without granting adults unfettered access to private chats.

Parents can adjust or switch off the controls at any time, and the system is managed using a single PIN created by the adults. If a teenager attempts to change any restricted settings, the system requires approval through the parent-set PIN.

Parents Track Group Changes And Privacy Settings

Parents can choose to receive notifications when teenagers join or leave a group, or when a specific group grows significantly in size.

If a teenager attempts to loosen certain privacy restrictions, the change requires approval via a parent-set PIN. WhatsApp stressed that the controls do not compromise personal communications.

All of these controls are being designed to support open conversations about how to use WhatsApp between parents and teens, while keeping everyone’s personal messages private.

The company confirmed that personal messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning no outside party, including WhatsApp itself, can view or hear them.

Restricted Settings Limit Meta AI and Channels

The parental controls also cover interactive features including WhatsApp Channels, Status updates, and Meta AI.

Enabling the restricted setting narrows the range of topics a teenager can discuss with the AI tool and deactivates features relying on Private Processing.

South Africa Rejects Blanket Social Media Bans

A Microsoft report from February 2026 indicated that 77% of South African teens sought support after experiencing online risks, marking the second consecutive year of increased reported behavior.

While international jurisdictions implement stringent social media regulations—such as Australia banning children under 16 from accessing social media unless platforms verify user ages—South Africa is not pursuing a similar blanket ban. Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi confirmed that such a ban is not under consideration, stating there is currently no irrefutable indication that a general ban prevents young people from being digitally active on platforms.
