WhatsApp should soon gain another layer of security to protect users’ accounts: records found in the most recent beta version indicate that the app will now allow account verification using email addresses.

The novelty was found by site WABetaInfoknown for sharing news about the Meta messenger.

Some users with access to the app’s beta have already found the new feature: in the security settings, the app would be preparing an email verification. In other words, the user would define a default address, receive a message with a verification code, enter this code into WhatsApp, and, from there, have this extra layer of security.

With a verified email linked to the account, the user could start using only the email address to configure WhatsApp on new devices, being able to choose this feature instead of the SMS message currently sent. It is important to highlight that the new feature will not change the mandatory use of a cell phone number to create an account on WhatsApp.

The new feature could make cases such as account theft more difficult and would also be an option in addition to measures already used such as two-step verification — which requires a valid email address to be configured, but does not depend on it to work.

The feature has been being worked on for a few months, and, apparently, it shouldn’t take long to be released to WhatsApp users in the final version of the application.
