When adults regret not playing an instrument anymore

Ozzy Osbourne regrets never learning an instrument. The “Godfather of Metal” has done a lot for the music genre, but who knows what else would have been possible! This is also what many parents say to themselves whose offspring have played an instrument – but not for very long.

Only a few children at the age of eleven would rather spend their afternoons playing the saxophone than with friends on the soccer field. That’s why parents like to decide for themselves. They silently hope that their daughter or son enjoys playing the instrument so much that it’s only a matter of time before he or she becomes a self-player without any pressure.

Insights in adulthood

Unfortunately, that is too short-sighted. It is often a matter of time before the children’s complaining gets on the parents’ nerves so much that they no longer have the energy to teach their child the sounds of the flute. At some point they give up the fight. And unfortunately that’s not the end of the story: Children grow older and, if not always into parents, at least into adults. Only then do they realize how wonderful it would be if they had given their life a different sound.

The start-up Skoove analyzed a survey of 3,000 Americans to find out how many were upset about quitting gaming. Former electric guitar players in particular regret their premature decision (55 percent), followed by acoustic guitarists (51 percent) and piano players (48 percent). It’s hard to motivate yourself as a little person for something that you can only understand as an adult. As a child, it’s not particularly convincing when John Dani, a neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania, says that playing an instrument particularly helps the brain because it engages all the important parts of the central nervous system at the same time.

But there is also good news: it is never too late. The actor Rami Malek helped practice, practice, practice to be able to follow in Freddie Mercury’s footsteps, and Taron Egerton ended up interpreting Elton John almost better than Elton John. Emily Blunt in particular could be a role model for all string tormentors and keyboard tinkerers: she persevered – even though little Emily hated playing the cello.
