When is Musician’s Day?
UNESCO established that November 22nd is International Music Dayin honor of Saint Cecilia, who was named Patron of Musicians by Pope Gregory XIII in 1584.
There is also International Musician’s Day, celebrated on October 1 in many countries. Both dates pay tribute to this art.
Why is Music Day celebrated on 22 November?
On November 22, the death of Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, is commemorated. Considered a Christian martyr, she is depicted by various 15th century artists and appears to be playing harps or other musical instruments, which is why she is associated with music.
Who was Saint Cecilia?
Cecilia of Rome is one of the most famous and celebrated saints throughout Christian history. The legend is that she came from a noble family in Rome, that she used to repent and that she consecrated her virginity to God. However, her father forced her to marry a young man named Valeriano. Just married, Saint Cecilia said to him:
“I have to tell you a secret. You must know that the angel of the Lord is watching over me. If you touch me as if I were your wife, the angel will be angry and you will suffer the consequences; On the other hand, if you love me, the angel in you will love you as he loves me.”
The husband asked her to show him the angel and that he would do whatever she asked. Valerian sought out Bishop Urbano, who instructed him in the faith and baptized him.
Tradition suggests that when the husband returned to see his friend, he saw an angel standing next to Cecilia and the heavenly one placing a garland of roses and lilies on their heads. Later, Pope Urban visited her at her home and baptized 400 people.
It is said that on the day of the wedding, while the musicians were playing, she sang to God in her heart.
he Pope Gregory XIII He named her patron because “she showed an irresistible attraction to the sweet chords of the instruments. So his sensitive spirit and his passion for this art turned his name into a musical symbol.”
