(28.11.2022) 581 new Germany scholarships awarded at Goethe University, ten of them for the first time through the scholarship holder challenge “You for you”

Make two out of one: According to this principle, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research doubles the sum raised by the Goethe University for Deutschlandstipendium holders every year. 581 scholarships were awarded at yesterday’s social get-together. This year, part of the sum was even quadrupled for the first time with a scholarship holder challenge.

Deutschlandstipendium supports young people who are talented, have a wide range of interests and are involved in voluntary work. This year, 400 private sponsors, 43 non-profit organizations and 38 companies donated a total of 1,045,800 euros for them. The annual scholarship enables the scholarship holders, one third of whom have a migration background, to receive a monthly grant of 300 euros. In addition, the scholarship is associated with a variety of forms of exchange: with the sponsors and their networks themselves and within the group of scholarship holders, who – supported by their mentors from Frankfurt’s economy and culture – can work together on projects across disciplines and disciplines . “In times when companies are finding it increasingly difficult to donate, we are very pleased that many private donors have supported us,” said Vice President Bernhard Brüne at yesterday’s award ceremony. This year, around a hundred more private sponsors – with smaller contributions – were committed to the scholarship than in previous years.

The leverage principle of the Deutschlandstipendium inspired one sponsor to come up with a special “challenge”: together with another donor, he challenged the former scholarship holder community to donate the sum of 9,000 euros themselves. In this case, the contribution would be doubled by the donors before being doubled again by the federal government, i.e. quadrupled in total. The scholarship holders accepted this challenge and overcame the 9,000 euro hurdle in an exciting finale. Almost sixty current and around one hundred former scholarship holders contributed to the challenge over a period of two months. 10 new Germany scholarships could be awarded in this way.

Since 2011, 12.5 million euros have been donated by Frankfurt citizens, organizations and companies. According to the federal government’s matching principle, students at Goethe University have so far benefited from a good 25 million euros through the Deutschlandstipendium.
