As the WTA finals in Cancun, Mexico begin on Sunday, the courts are still under construction.

The WTA Finals are supposed to be one of the flagship annual events of women’s tennis, the grand mass of the WTA circuit. This tournament brings together the eight best players in the world, and sees them compete to win the Masters. Only this year, the organization does not seem up to the task of the event.

While the tournament is due to begin this Sunday, the infrastructures seem far from being up to the level needed to accommodate the elite of world tennis. In a video published by Anton Dubrov, Aryna Sabalenka’s coach, we can see that the enclosure supposed to host the matches is still under construction. Another problem is that the training classes aren’t up to the challenge either. In an Instagram story published by the world number one herself, only two courts are available, hampered by scaffolding. The recent US Open finalist added the following comment to her photo: “2 training grounds until Saturday and scaffolding on the side“. An organization not up to the level given the prestige of the participants: Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova and Maria Sakkari will be the eight candidates for the title.
