The root cause wasn’t the technology, but the stakeholders: faculty members generally disliked open textbooks because they lacked the specific teaching resources they required. Despite the strategic alignment and executive excitement, the lack of user buy-in made the project untenable.

“We had to kill the idea,” Clark said. However, he emphasizes that killing a project does not equal a total loss. The university learned critical requirements for future AI efforts, such as the necessity for multilingual support and the ability to handle complex mathematical symbols.
