Do you have a high pain threshold and can’t remember when you last visited the doctor? Good for you! It’s good that you let your body solve it itself with many complaints. Often you will get better on your own, but sometimes you have to take action right away.

Many people do not consider their own complaints urgent enough and stay at home for too long. Of course you don’t have to go to the doctor for every ache. Yet there are certain symptoms that seem harmless at first, but can actually be quite dangerous. Therefore, contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms:

1. Persistent fever

Have you had a fever for more than three weeks and therefore a body temperature of more than 38 degrees Celsius? Then there may be a nasty infection in your body that needs to be treated. Apparently your body can’t fix it on its own, so go see your doctor for an examination.

2. Short of breath out of the blue

It is not surprising that you are short of breath when you run your lungs out on the treadmill in the gym. Then don’t panic. But if the shortness of breath comes out of the blue, it could be a sign of one of many heart problems. Play it safe and get yourself checked.

3. Sudden swelling

With thrombosis, your leg or arm can suddenly swell. Your skin often turns red or bluish. It feels hot and you may experience cramping or stabbing pain. Do you recognize these complaints and is the swelling very sudden? Call your doctor right away for advice.

4. Lose a lot of weight in a short time

It is never good to lose a lot of kilos in a very short time. Especially if you lose weight unconsciously, this can indicate an underlying health problem. Apparently you use more energy and nutrients than usual. That’s because your body needs energy to make you better. The cause may lie with an overactive thyroid gland, COPD, heart failure, chewing or swallowing problems or cancer. Therefore, discuss this quickly with your doctor.

5. Blood in urine

Blood in your urine should also ring alarm bells. Always check whether you are not having your period, because even then your pee can sometimes turn dark red. Cause? Often it is bladder or kidney inflammation, but it can also be kidney stones or bladder or kidney cancer. For all possible causes, it is important that you sound the alarm in time.

Do you especially have pain when urinating? You can recognize a bladder infection by these (surprising) symptoms.

6. Sudden blurry vision

If you are otherwise healthy, but suddenly experience vision loss, it could indicate a chronic health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or multiple sclerosis (MS). See your doctor to rule out these serious problems.

7. Pressure and pain in your chest

It is not surprising that you sometimes have a feeling of pressure or pain in the chest. This is often after a slightly too intensive training or during or after a flu or a cold. But do you just feel that pressure or pain in your chest? Call the doctor immediately. This is especially important if the pain or pressure does not go away and you also have nausea or a fever at the same time. It could be a sign of heart disease, asthma or pneumonia.

Do you recognize yourself in the symptoms above. Then call the doctor to be sure to rule out something serious. Fortunately, that chance is small, but let yourself be extra reassured. Better too careful than too late.
