US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed doubts about the prospects for reform in Iran. Although the candidate chosen is considered a “moderate”, the supreme leader, likely Ali Khamenei, remains the country’s main deciding factor.

He sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump for his decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.

“When this administration came in, we tried to re-engage in nuclear diplomacy with Iran because if we could just remove one problem, which is the potential for Iran to have nuclear weapons, that would be a good thing,” Blinken said.

He added that instead of waiting at least a year to build the capacity to produce fissile material for a nuclear weapon, the process would likely take just one to two weeks. Blinken also said the United States would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, but preferred to continue using diplomacy to prevent that scenario.

“If Iran is serious about cooperation, we need to make sure that it actually backs away from the work that it has been doing on its program,” the US Secretary of State concluded.

Earlier, Cursor wrote that the situation with Iran is becoming increasingly tense, since, according to IAEA Director Rafael Grossi, the country is close to accumulating enough enriched uranium to create a nuclear weapon. In his opinion, creating a working nuclear warhead requires not only enriched uranium, but also many other steps and stages.
