The answer is: probably never. About July, politics and the Holzinger farmer’s snack plate.

FNothing provides as reliable information about the state of Germany as summer interviews with politicians. The new season has just started. The chancellor and the federal president were already on it, others will follow, this weekend, for example, the chairmen of the CSU and the left. And like snow globes, citizens’ television screens once again show tiny but easily recognizable features of our world behind glass. It is not so much the politicians’ answers that are meaningful, but rather the circumstances of the survey itself. The fact that the vast majority of Germans do not even watch the interviews is part of the phenomenon.

Because the summer interview as such has lost its importance as much as the tie. Both are even related. The clearly ordered world of the past is sorted according to new rules, and one of them is: you can recognize someone who has power more by the number of his Twitter followers than by his classic appearance. Top politicians can leave their shirt collars open, but they can hardly avoid social media. There they then send photos, videos and strong opinions all year round. In addition, they give conventional interviews, sit on talk shows and record podcasts. The Chancellor was only five days before his summer interview on the ARD. There’s always something going on. In the past, the summer interviews were supposed to fill the summer slump. Today there is none.
