The elections for the 25th Knesset: Today (Wednesday) the counting of the usual envelopes is expected to end. By tomorrow the counting of the double envelopes should also be finished and the final results of the elections will be announced.

After that, the process of forming the government will begin.

The person who is expected, at least according to the results of the polls and the counting of the true votes, to receive the mandate from President Yitzhak Herzog is Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the law, the official results of the elections are published no later than a week after the elections – that is, on November 9, 2015 in Sheshon, Israel, although they are usually published even earlier.

After the publication of the results, they will be presented to the President of the State by the Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Judge Yitzhak Amit.

According to practice, the CEO of the President’s House will invite the representatives of the factions that were elected to the Knesset to consultations with the President at the President’s House – and the round of recommendations will begin with President Herzog, regarding the candidate who should be entrusted with the job of forming the government.

At the end of the round of recommendations, the president will transfer the mandate to form the government to the candidate with the largest number of recommendations.

The final deadline for imposing the mandate on the candidate to form the government is up to a week after the publication of the official results – November 16, 2012 in Hashvan, but it is possible that it will be imposed even earlier – since Netanyahu comes with a solid majority of 61 mandates.

On November 15, the 25th Knesset will convene for the first time for a special session, during which the members of the Knesset will be sworn in.

From the moment the president assigns the task of forming the government to the elected member of the Knesset, he will have 28 days to form a new government in Israel, according to the Basic Law: The Government. In a situation where an extension of the process is required, the President has the authority to grant an extension of up to 14 additional days according to the law.

If Netanyahu informs the president that he “has been able” to form a government, a new government will be formed and sworn in a few days later.

If a government is not formed even after the additional two weeks, the president will have three days for consultations with the parties – after which he can assign the task of forming the government to another candidate, who will also have 28 days at his disposal.
