Düsseldorf In the Burchardkai container terminal in the port of Hamburg, large cranes handle containers between ships, trains or trucks. But the quay has a limited footprint. Therefore, the containers are stacked high. If a cargo is at the bottom and has to be sent again, it becomes a problem. This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in: it suggests which containers should be placed where upon arrival.

The system knows the data records of thousands of containers and can calculate where the best place is, literally. The Aachen-based AI company Inform has calculated that this would save 80,000 empty trips per year. “When it comes to data-driven processes, the AI usually knows better than humans,” says Jörg Herbers, Managing Director at Inform.

To save time and money, more and more companies rely on the decisions of artificial intelligence. Herbers and the AI trainer Laura Bies from the private Wilhelm Scheer Institute explained to the Handelsblatt what is important and what options there are.
