A record number of people traveling abroad was observed in Latvia – their number has almost doubled, as much as 44 percent, compared to last week.
“Traffic to neighboring Latvia increases almost every weekend or holiday, but this time the numbers shot up higher than usual. Increasingly, Lithuanians, looking for an alternative to the overcrowded local seaside, are choosing the quiet and more spacious coast of Latvia,” says the data analyst.
Other neighboring states remain among travelers’ favorite destinations. There has been a significant increase in trips to Poland, which continues to remain on the travelers’ charts – 22% of people visited Žolinė during the weekend. more people than a week ago at the same time.
According to G. Jankauskas, growth trends are also noticeable when traveling to other nearby, but less visited regions. For example, the number of travelers to Estonia increased by 43 percent compared to the week before.
In Palanga – an influx of vacationers
During the long Žolinė weekend, the big cities of Lithuania emptied significantly, and the flow of people to the seaside and smaller Lithuanian cities jumped up, according to the collected data.
“The headlines about Palanga bursting at the seams have been confirmed – the big data show that the flow of people in the resort increased by even 20% on Sunday, compared to last week,” says G. Jankauskas.
It is clearly visible that people flocked to the resorts from the big cities. Vilnius and Kaunas became noticeably quieter and calmer during this period – this is confirmed by the data. The number of people in Vilnius and Kaunas this Saturday was respectively 6 percent. and 7 percent lower compared to the week before.
“More than 10 percent more municipal resorts throughout Lithuania could also enjoy the increase in the flow of people: Zarasų district, Neringa municipality, Birštonas municipality, Ignalina municipality. Lakes and forests provide a perfect environment for recreation and leisure, making these regions extremely popular among camping enthusiasts and nature lovers,” says the data scientist.
