We keep getting bored with the talk of millennials, but for once, that’s a term they picked up from their parents. To have proof of this, it suffices to go back almost 30 years. In 1995, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, a mythical rap group was born: La Scred Connexion. And for these street poets, ‘scred’ already has its current meaning: it’s just the verlan of a very common word: ‘discreet’. Initially, “discreet” became “scredi”, before losing its final vowel.
Secretiveness and trickery
Here, “discreet” evokes dissimulation more than discretion. To do something “in scred” is to do it with a certain illegitimacy, or at least with the desire not to get caught:
