To make a racket is to make a racket. Everyone knows that. But where does this curious word come from and why isn’t it spelled “lady oar”, or something like that? The explanation is very simple.

« Ramdam » = « ramadan »

The term “ramdam” comes quite simply… from the Ramadan festival. As almost everyone knows, during this period, Muslims gather around nightly feasts when they break the fast. The conversations are sometimes noisy and this is not always to the taste of the neighbors… This is how “Ramadan” became “ramdam”, in other words “noise”.

An old expression

Another term from suburban Arabic? Well no, not at all: “ramdam” is attested as early as 1840. Suffice to say that if they never pronounced the words “zarma” or “hagra”, your great-grandparents already spoke of “ramdam”. And from an exclusively nocturnal noise at first, the term gradually extended to all forms of noise.
