R’n’B star Irish Grinstead died on Saturday at the age of 43. This is reported by several US media outlets, citing a statement from the singer’s sister. The cause of death is not yet known.

Grinstead’s sister, LeMisha Grinstead, 45, announced the sad news on Instagram on Saturday. Her statement read: “It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that my beautiful sister and friend passed away this evening. She fought a long battle and has finally found peace.”

The sisters Irish and LeMisha Grinstead, together with singer Kameelah Williams (45), became known in the 1990s as the R’n’B girl group 702.

The musicians celebrated their breakthrough and their greatest chart success in 1999 with their single “Where My Girls At?”, written by hip-hop star Missy Elliott (now 52).

Elliott commented on LeMisha Grinstead’s news of her sister Irish’s death on Instagram with the words: “Many prayers for your family” and posted emojis of praying hands, a dove and a broken heart.

The rap icon also wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Irish, may your beautiful soul find rest in the arms of the Lord.”

Last year Irish Grinstead withdrew from the public eye

The girl band 702 has existed with interruptions and with changing line-ups since the mid-1990s. The founding members originally included Irish’s twin sister Orish, who died of kidney failure in 2008 at the age of 27.

In 2021, the sisters Irish and LeMisha announced that they would be taking part in a new musical TV format together. However, in December 2022, Irish Grinstead withdrew from the public due to “serious” health reasons.

LeMisha Grinstead said goodbye to her sister on Instagram: “This girl shined like stars, she was beautiful inside and out. Being able to share the stage with her was a pleasure that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
