Discover London’s best independent theatres with this in-depth guide. From the iconic Old Vic to the trendy Kiln Theatre, explore the hidden gems of London’s theatre scene and discover the unmissable shows coming up in the coming months.

A night at the theatre is one of the best experiences you can have in London. With the exception of New York, no city offers the same range of innovation, diversity and exciting new voices. Although the West End is unique, the number and quality of London’s vibrant, small independent theatre scenes are true gems of the city.

From Hackney to Southwark, I want to introduce you to some of the independent theatres I have frequented and also tell you about some of the shows that will be presented in the coming months. If you are planning a holiday in the English capital, you can visit them too.

The Old Vic

One of London’s most famous independent theatres, The Old Vic is a must for any theatre lover. Founded way back in 1818, it has a rich history, including severe damage during the Blitz, its closure and subsequent reopening. It has recently staged “Present Laughter” Of Noel Coward, con Andrew Scott.

It is currently on stage The Real Thingwritten by legendary playwright Tom Stoppard. This play explores the layers of reality and deception inherent in performance and performativity. James McArdle and Bel Powley play a married couple whose professional relationship with fiction—as a playwright and an actress, respectively—makes honest and faithful relationships difficult.

Southwark Playhouse

Founded in 1993, the Southwark Playhouse is a theatre company and charity, committed to using the arts as a force for good in the community. Spread across two venues, Borough and Elephant & Castle, it focuses on a diverse and innovative portfolio of work, alongside a programme of teaching and participation.

I have been there several times, also because, at least in the early 2000s, it was much easier to find available tickets. Buy tickets: SOUTHWARKPLAYHOUSE.CO.UK

Arcola Theatre

Located in Hackney, Arcola is one of London’s most affordable theatres and is committed to presenting a programme that promotes diversity and challenges the status quo of the industry. Under the artistic direction of Mehmet Ergen, it offers an eclectic mix of plays, operas and musicals.

Surrender is a new modern interpretation of “The Taming of the Shrew“. This show, much discussed in London, is the result of a collaboration between the writer Sophie Swithinbank and the director/actress Phoebe Ladenburg.

It will be on stage from October 4th to 28th. From a quick check on ARCOLATHEATRE.COMI saw that some tickets are still available.

Kiln Theatre

Formerly known as Tricycle Theatreil Kiln Theatre won Best Theatre in London at the Stage Awards in 2021. It has launched many plays that have had great success nationally, such as “Red Velvet”, “The Son” and “Handbagged”. Located in Kilburn, in addition to its 292-seat main hall, it also houses an independent cinema, bar, restaurant and café.

It is a very trendy theatre, located in one of the fastest growing areas of London. Booking is essential on KILNTHEATRE.COMbut you can also just visit to enjoy a cocktail in its very popular bar.

Finborough Theatre

Il Finborough Theatre It may be small – with just 50 seats in its main hall – but this West Brompton venue, a stone’s throw from Chelsea, is no less ambitious than its much larger venues. As well as presenting original works from across the UK and Ireland, it stages intimate productions by renowned playwrights such as Tennessee Williams e Frank McGuinnessIt is impossible to show up without a reservation, so visit FINBOROUGHTHEATRE.CO.UK.

Bush Theatre

This independent theatre prides itself on discovering new and exciting playwrights who reflect the vibrancy of contemporary British culture. In an industry often marked by inequality of opportunity, it has given a platform to many artists and plays that have gone on to make it to the West End and launched actors such as Alan Rickman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the immense Andrew Scott.

On the program this winter there is Tender. Ivy and Ash are at different stages of their lives. One has an apartment, a boyfriend, and a plan. The other has just gotten out of a toxic relationship and doesn’t know what comes next. But they share a chance meeting, and something blossoms between them.

Considering that this is the new work of Eleanor Tindallwhich I saw “Before I Was A Bear” at the Soho Theatre a few years ago, and which I was thrilled with, I highly recommend you book a ticket at BUSHTHEATRE.CO.UK and to explore live this romantic plot that seems very promising on paper. It is scheduled from November 19 to December 21.

Park Theatre

Located near Finsbury Park, the Park Theatre is one of London’s more recent success stories. Launched in 2013, after a long search for a suitable space, it soon gained the backing of British theatre icons such as Ian McKellen and Alan Rickman. Under the artistic direction of Jez Bond, it is known for its pioneering support of modern, diverse theatre, and hosts everything from gritty dramas to new musicals in its two intimate 200- and 90-seat auditoriums.

Being so young, I have never been, but I keep reading great reviews in the British press, and have it marked as my next visit, whatever the plans. If you want to beat me to it, their website, where you can book a visit, is PARKTHEATRE.CO.UK.
