“There’s no such thing as bad weather, you just have to be properly dressed,” was my grandmother’s everyday wisdom. She was referring primarily to the practical use of rainwear. Many brands are showing us that a raincoat can also look like a fashion statement.

The Stutterheim label, founded in Sweden in 2010, offers a huge selection of waterproof jackets, trench coats and ponchos in the latest colors and cuts that you would love to keep wearing even when the sun is shining. The Danish brand Rains, which even has two of its own stores in Berlin (Weinmeisterstrasse and Kudamm), offers rainwear that is a bit sportier and cheaper. The traditional English brand Barbour is currently launching many exciting collaborations with trendy designer labels such as Loewe or Chloé, and at Chanel, luxury rubber boots are becoming classics that sell like hot cakes. There are even waiting lists for the models.

Almost all designers and even haute couture have long offered luxury versions of rainwear, which are good to browse through at vintage suppliers. If you look at the online platform Vestiaire Collective, you can find colored raincoats by Ilse Jacobsen, Moncler or APC for little money. Investing in high-quality classics like those from Burberry or Aquascutum is always worthwhile because it’s sustainable. The impregnated cotton poplin coats are simply impossible to kill and not only serve their purpose, but also become more and more beautiful and casual with increasing patina. Vintage vinyl jackets by Courréges or Paco Rabanne give you a good sixties look à la Emma Peel.

A very personal tip from me is to buy a nice umbrella. It proves a special style and can also be the icing on the cake, which does not break immediately like mass-produced discounter umbrellas or only serves its purpose. The Milan-based umbrella manufacturer Francesco Maglia has been producing true works of art in umbrellas for generations. Each copy is made of specially impregnated, dreamy fabrics and has artistically crafted wooden frames and handles. A look at the website of the Hanoverian men’s outfitter Michael Jondral invites you to discover this great craft. Umbrellas don’t always have to be black and unimaginative!

If you are lucky, you will find a great vintage umbrella from the traditional Parisian company Hermès or the London purveyor to the court Brigg Umbrellas. Brigg screens are the classics of their trade, and who could bring more experience to the table than the rain-tested Englishmen. Even an umbrella can be sustainable and last a lifetime. An investment that pays off and makes even bad weather a pleasure.
