The holiday destination influences how well we can relax – and whether there is competition with other tourists. An environmental economist has examined travel practices to watch out for.
As is well known, tourists hardly appreciate anything less than other tourists. The choice of a travel destination is therefore subject to the paradoxical sign that the most popular destinations are often the worst, unless financial or other obstacles limit the number of visitors. How much you suffer from the presence of others also depends on the type of travel: With classic sightseeing, it is in the nature of things that many are interested in the same thing – and this should be priced into the experience in advance .
This is less true for extreme hikes in remote areas: Anyone looking for an individual encounter with nature in the Gobi desert, for example, could perceive a small number of people who also set off there as an impairment of their own enjoyment.
