There are innumerable health benefits of consuming fruits. Fruits contain all the essential nutrients for the body, including all kinds of minerals, vitamins and fiber. Consuming fruits keeps the digestive system healthy, removes anemia, develops the body, strengthens the immune system and prevents diseases.
Ayurveda Doctor Deeksha Bhavsar According to Ayurveda, like everything else, there are some rules for eating fruits. Eating fruits at the wrong time and in the wrong way can cause harm to health instead of benefits. According to Ayurveda, fruits are very light and easy to digest. They are much lighter than other foods.
Eating fruits before or after a meal i.e. with heavy food can cause many stomach related problems. By doing this, the fruits stay in the stomach for the same time as the heaviest food takes to digest. Due to this, they stay in the stomach for a long time and get overcooked by the digestive juices, due to which they start fermenting.
Disadvantages of eating fruits with heavy meals
This fermented mess in the stomach is called ‘ama’ or improperly digested food toxins in Ayurveda. This moist, acidic waste matter accumulates in the digestive tract where it can affect digestion – interfering with the secretion of our digestive juices, hindering the absorption of nutrients and potentially contributing to indigestion, food sensitivities and gut inflammation. This is why it is always best to eat fruit alone, not with or after meals.

- Do not mix fruit with milk or yogurt (plant-based milk/yogurt is okay).
