It wasn’t just the national team that delivered spectacular European Championship moments on the pitch – the players’ wives in the stands also attracted attention with their looks. But which of them has the best style?
On Friday evening, the German national team will face Spain in the quarter-finals of the European Championship. The whole of Germany is excited, and the players’ wives in the stands in particular will be keeping their fingers crossed as Manuel Neuer, İlkay Gündoğan and co. fight for a place in the semi-finals. In previous games, the partners of the football professionals have already supported them in the stadium – and often appeared in sophisticated jersey combinations. Crop tops in particular have been very popular so far, but other unusual creations have also been included. Thomas Hayo told t-online who he thinks combines the players’ kit particularly well.
Thomas Hayo is a successful creative director and has sat on the “Germany’s Next Top Model” jury alongside Heidi Klum several times during his career. At the New Faces Awards in Berlin, the 55-year-old, who used to play football himself, gave t-online styling tips for jersey enthusiasts: “You should style the jersey so that it matches the rest of your look. For example, I think it’s really cool when someone wears cool 501 boyfriend jeans. Then you should wear a loose, cool T-shirt with it,” says Hayo. But you can also “tie the knot or show a bit more skin.” In general, however, it’s all about the overall look.
For example, İlkay Gündoğan’s wife Sara has mastered the casual look very well, says Thomas Hayo – but Anika Neuer, wife of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, is particularly impressive with her many different jersey variations. “Anika, of course, gets full marks from me.” Hayo thinks it’s nice “how she combines it. Two crop top looks, one inside.”
One player’s wife seems to have particularly taken a liking to Thomas Hayo: “Lisa Müller – very nice,” praises the fashion expert. The wife of midfielder Thomas Müller combined the pink away jersey of the German national team for the round of 16 match against Denmark with a white skirt and a purple watch as well as a matching bag. “It’s also a very, very inconspicuous but cool look because the colors match very well,” says Hayo. The watch in particular harmonizes well with the jersey. The former “The Masked Singer” candidate’s conclusion: “With Lisa Müller as a role model, you’re doing very well.”
Thomas Hayo emphasizes, however, that fans can’t really go wrong with any styling option: “There are no fashion faux pas in that sense. That’s the beauty of today. If you feel comfortable in it, then it doesn’t exist.”
Personally, he would style his jersey in a more classic way: “The way I used to play – the jersey out from under my pants, slightly tucked over it, as if I were playing myself.”
