In times when the money shouldn’t be allowed to sour in the bank and the interest rate situation makes it difficult to buy a property, chic timepieces are a tempting investment.

If you want to use the vintage market for investing, you are well advised to invest in watches. Similar to bags, the classics dominate in this area, i.e. models that are less subject to fashion. This is something to keep in mind when buying a watch, both new and used.
If you want to buy a watch that has had a previous owner, the source plays a major role. It should be reputable, because the provenance of the piece should be proven as completely as possible by certificates, purchase receipts and of course the papers of the watch with serial number and dealer’s stamp or similar.
But which watches are really worth investing in? First of all, I recommend “real” brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe or Jaeger-LeCoultre. Models bearing these names are intrinsically better investments than fashion watches from a designer label, which rarely increase in value over the years.
Timeless models
But be careful, not every model guarantees an increase in profits, and so the watches, which are mostly already established classics and whose history of origin goes back many decades, are considered a safe bet. Like this one, for example: In 1931, René-Alfred Chauvot had a tricky job to do at Jaeger-LeCoultre. It consisted of protecting the fragile glass of a wristwatch during sporting activities such as horse polo. The world-famous “Reverso” watch was created, the face of which can be turned around. This model is still a surefire investment to this day, even if there is a long wait before purchasing it. The old copies are traded at a multiple of their new price.

You can’t go wrong with the Swiss watch company Rolex either if you rely on the Daytona, Datejust, Submariner or the Oyster Perpetual models. The sporty watches that never go out of style are in constant demand worldwide – especially the men’s models, which women also like to wear.

With good models from reputable second hand, you have a significant gain over the years. For generations, Rolex has remained a popular watch that, in addition to its role as a status symbol, is also one of the safest investments in the vintage watch market. Anyone who prefers the house of Patek Philippe is well advised to buy the classic models Nautilus or Aquanaut.
Exotic and niche brands
In recent years, however, more extravagant models or exotic models have also risen sharply in price and have achieved record sums at auctions. Cartier’s “Crash” in 1967, said to have been inspired by a watch deformed in a car accident and reminiscent of artist Salvador Dali’s running watches, has tripled in price even in the 2011 reissue. If you don’t care about speculative aspects and still want to wear a stylish vintage watch, you are in good hands with brands that have not yet been hyped. The 1970s watches from the Swiss company Rado, for example, are original. Tip: The German portals chrono24.de and chronext.de are reputable dealers who offer both new and vintage watches.
