Vienna. The pensions of former National Council members who were in the old pension scheme, which was reorganized in the summer of 1997 by the then SPÖ-ÖVP federal government, cost 11.6 million euros. Of the 148 former National Council members, four receive pensions of more than 8,190 euros per month, or more than 114,660 euros per year.

As of 31 July 1997, all politicians who had served ten years in parliament or four years in government automatically remained in the old pension system. Others were able to choose between the old concession system and the new, less financially attractive rules (the pension fund system).

Luxury pension of €8.4 million per year for ex-politicians

Joining these four top earners are 50 more former National Council members, who receive pensions between 4,095 euros and 8,190 euros per month. The other 89 colleagues also receive much more than the ASVG maximum pension. Taxpayers have to finance ex-politicians’ luxury pensions totaling 8.4 million euros per year. ASVG retirees can only shake their heads at the average pension paid to ex-politicians: Euro 4,074 certainly makes these former politicians’ livelihoods easier, even with the current price hikes.

In addition, there are survivors’ pensions payable to surviving dependents of former members of the National Council. In 2022, the widows of former politicians were paid more than 3.2 million euros, equivalent to an average of 2571 euros per person and month. (yenivatan.at)
