WASHINGTON – The administration of United States (US) President Joe Biden will approve the supply of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine.

US media reported on the plans on Tuesday (13/6/2023), citing US official sources.

“After weeks of internal wrangling over how to equip the Abrams tanks the United States has provided to Kiev, the White House is expected to agree on the transfer of depleted uranium tank munitions to Ukraine,” the US newspaper report said, citing administration sources.

Officials say there are no serious obstacles to agreeing to deliver depleted uranium munitions.

However, other sources expressed concern regarding the transfer of the bullets. Washington could be criticized for providing weapons that harm human health and the environment, according to the paper.

“In addition, the White House is still discussing the possibility of providing cluster munitions to Ukraine, among other weapons,” the US news outlet said.

In late April, UK Deputy Defense Secretary James Heappey said London had delivered thousands of rounds to Kiev for its donated Challenger 2 main battle tanks, including some with depleted uranium.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the transfer of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine. He said London must bear responsibility for the consequences.
