Shale Gas Industry Targets Pennsylvania
Harris, ‘passionate’ about first TV debate on the 10th
Trump: “I’ve been preparing for this debate my whole life” Focus on policy

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump clashed sharply on the 5th (local time) over ‘energy policy’. Energy is a major issue in Pennsylvania, a major battleground state in this presidential election and highly dependent on the fossil fuel industry, and is expected to have a significant impact on the outcome.

The two candidates also showed contrast in the process of preparing for the first TV debate, which will be held on the 10th in Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, and is considered a decisive factor in this presidential election. Candidate Harris even hired a “Trump double” and went through mock training, while Candidate Trump said, “I’ve been preparing for this debate my whole life,” and said he didn’t need to prepare. This debate will be held at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on the 10th (10 a.m. on the 11th in Korea).

Trump, who promotes the use of fossil fuels by saying that “climate change is a fraud,” criticized the Joe Biden administration’s pro-environmental policy “Green New Deal,” which emphasizes electric vehicles and renewable energy, in a speech in New York on the 5th. He said, “If I am re-elected, I will scrap the Green New Deal. It is the biggest fraud in history and a fraud worth at least $10 trillion (about 13,000 trillion won).” He also announced his intention to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, eliminate subsidies for wind power generation, and abolish various environmental regulations.

Candidate Harris believes that the climate crisis is a real threat and urgent measures are needed. The Joe Biden administration, which she is a part of, approved the 10th offshore wind power project since President Biden took office on the same day. This brings the cumulative wind power capacity in the U.S. to 15 gigawatts (GW), enough to power 5.25 million homes.

The White House said, “This project was accomplished under the leadership of President Biden and Candidate Harris,” and hinted at the plan to increase wind power generation capacity to 30 GW by 2030. This means that if Candidate Harris wins the presidential election, she will expand renewable energy projects.

However, candidate Harris is showing an ambiguous attitude toward fracking, a shale gas extraction method that many Pennsylvania residents support. During the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, she said, “I will ban fracking,” citing environmental pollution as a reason, but in an interview with CNN on the 29th of last month, she changed her position, saying, “I will not ban it.” This is interpreted as a move that is conscious of the local public sentiment that is friendly to fracking.

Harris arrived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 5th and set up a virtual ‘TV debate training camp’. She even put a wig on Philippe Linus, a former aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and began intensive training to act as a ‘Trump stand-in’. Linus also acted as Trump’s stand-in during the 2016 presidential election when Clinton and Trump faced off.

Instead of practicing, Trump is focusing on ‘policy preparation’ with his various staff members. He also recently brought former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who was considered a ‘Harris sniper’ after opposing Harris during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, to his presidential campaign. This is interpreted as an intention to get advice on how to attack Harris.
