Our children, schoolgirls and students, are eternally bored. From what, and above all, what could we do to “turn them on”?

from Giancarlo Visitilli

CLike the days of monotony sung by Franco Battiato, according to whom «the moments lived intensely are extinguished». In the way of the days of many children, girls and teenagers. Those who, is a constant: “mom, but I’m bored” even when I’m at the cinema, in the theater, in front of the mobile phone screen to “play”. It is a refrain that can be heard everywhere, in the privacy of our kitchens and on sofas, in pizzerias and playgrounds. At school. Our children, schoolgirls and students, are eternally bored. From what, and above all, what could we do to “turn them on”? Their motivation should start waking up at home every morning, before going out to catapult themselves into the tired and sad classrooms of the school, where they would also have the right to find just as many adults who do nothing for a living but take care of their own esteem, to take care of that others. But if already at home the whole problem is: “what grade did you get?”, “if you get 9 I’ll buy it for you”, why should children, male and female students be encouraged to change their lives? Certainly not to receive the prize, the weekly pocket money, the vote, the “piece of paper”. Nothing else matters. Maybe the girls and boys are dying, they have a completely different problem, for example the one complained by Anna and thousands of others like her: «Prof, I don’t feel encouraged to do anything. I can’t find anything worth working on. It’s all so reluctantly: you study, you commit yourself, you go to university and then you have to start doing another procedure again. There’s no work and you also have to study things that don’t interest you, because that’s what they ask for on the market». O Alberto: «but also in human relationships by now it is like this; always stay pissed, always talking to us about problems, about the future that has already passed, about a world that doesn’t promise anything, thank you, then at 13 you kill yourself!».

SThe students’ words have been unbearable for quite a few years now. And if we had the Covid excuse, now we’re picking up the shards of vases that were already cracked. “Society has moved from the provision of an abundance of prohibitions to an offer of immense possibilities – explains Mario De Pasquale, philosopher, former teacher and headmaster -. Boys are subjected to a large amount of hyperstimulation which requires a high performance principle from them. Increasingly, institutions and families are giving up responding to requests for recognition and guidance from their children. They would almost be like flâneurs, lost in the solitary crowd, left to their own solitude in assuming responsibility». Therefore, our children and students passively await the fulfillment of their destiny, “which comes towards us, following the already preordained direction”. Nothing that has to do with hope, one that implies an active commitment, the possibility of pulling the plug, of critically evaluating and judging the present, the authentic definition of the profound “who I am” and “what I want”. Assuming that fathers, mothers, teachers, educators, the mirrors of those reflections, are capable of responding.
