Almost 48 hours after the first tremors, information concerning the victims began to be broadcast. During the night from Friday to Saturday, a terrible earthquake, whose epicenter was located in the province of Al-Haouz, southwest of Marrakech, struck Morocco. The human and material damage caused by the latter is considerable.
According to a final provisional report, given by the authorities late Sunday afternoon, 2,122 people lost their lives during this earthquake. At least four French people appear on this list, the Quai d’Orsay said.
A young couple among the victims
“We deplore the death of three other French nationals near Marrakech, which brings the balance sheet, at this stage, to four French victims. Fifteen injured French nationals have been identified,” the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday afternoon in a press release.
In the process, the French ambassador to Morocco Christophe Lecourtier provided some information on the victims to our colleagues at BFMTV. “The first French person to die is a compatriot who had a heart attack in Agadir, at the time of the earthquake,” he first said, referring to the victim announced Saturday evening by the Quai d’Orsay, which used the same terms in a press release.
“Unfortunately, between yesterday and today (between Saturday and Sunday, Editor’s note), we learned of the death of a young couple, who were in a house near Marrakech. It collapsed,” continues Christophe Lecourtier. According to a press release from the Meaux mosque, the couple was from Seine-et-Marne. Both were volunteers at this mosque.
Concerning the fourth Frenchman who died, this is a person who was in a village at the epicenter of the earthquake. He was with his family, specifies the ambassador, all of whose members are “wounded and treated”.
