  • The Pan American and World Health Organizations donated supplies to our country to strengthen the response to contingencies.
  • In 2017, a mobile hospital was set up on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in Oaxaca, to care for the population affected by the earthquake.
  • The emergency medical equipment received will be used in the states of Morelos and Puebla in case they are required due to the activity of the Popocatépetl volcano.

The Ministry of Health (SSa) has the Operational Center for Contingency Care (Copac), made up of emergency medical teams or mobile hospitalswhich strengthen the capacities for preparation and response to emergencies and disasters, said the general director of Epidemiology, Gabriel García Rodríguez.

When leading the delivery-reception of the health team, who donated the Pan American and World Health Organizations (PAHO/WHO)highlighted that these sanitary equipment and supplies strengthen the emergency medical teams (EMT), for the response to health emergencies of the Ministry of Health.

What does the received emergency medical kits contain?

In the ceremony held in the 24th Military Zone of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) in Cuernavaca, Morelos, explained that Copac’s mobile units are equipped with hospital beds, deployable tent systems, air conditioning, and lighting. They are operated by a team of health professionals trained in emergency care and high-impact disasters.

He stressed that, with international cooperation, important support has been obtained that improves operations in places that are difficult to access, even to help nations like Haiti.

The Director General of Epidemiology said that, with the technical support of the WHO, in 2017 the first EMT started with the installation of the mobile hospital to care for the population of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in Oaxacadue to the earthquake registered in September of that year.

Distribution throughout the country

With these mobile hospitals and supplies, from 2018 to date, 15 emergency operations have been deployed, nine due to COVID-19 in Guerrero, Chihuahua, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Colima and Michoacán; five due to earthquakes in Oaxaca, Michoacán, Colima; one international in the Republic of Haiti; and one for humanitarian assistance to migrants in Baja California.

Likewise, 11 training and capacity building deployments were carried out in Puebla, Mexico City, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Quintana Roo, Veracruz and Morelos.

In this regard, PAHO’s advisor on Public Health Laboratory Services and Health Emergency Networks, Jean Marc Gabastou, said that Mexico is a model in the Americas for dealing with problems caused by natural or health phenomena.

He recalled that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico expressed solidarity with Central American countries by making the infrastructure of the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) and technological knowledge to face the SARS CoV-2 virus.

He urged nations to maintain hospital capacity to face a future pandemic, since even when the WHO terminated the COVID-19 emergency, “we must not lower our guard.”

The kits donated for water treatment, X-ray equipment and other medical supplies will be used in the states of Morelos and Puebla, in case they are required by the activity of the Popocatepetl volcano.
