WHO estimates mortality rate from variant of coronavirus “delta”

by time news

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) have not recorded an increased mortality rate from the delta variant of the coronavirus. For this, special laboratory tests were carried out, said WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove at a briefing.

Moreover, it is known that this variant is more infectious than even the “alpha” strain. As a result, van Kerkhove emphasized that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection.

Earlier, the head of the Vector Center, Rinat Maksyutov, said that the delta strain of the coronavirus COVID-19 accounts for over 95% of new infections in most regions of Russia. The spread of the gamma strain is considered unlikely, he said.

The expert expressed the opinion that the new strains of the virus are likely to be the result of the Delta mutation. As for the use of vaccines to prevent them, mutations do not significantly reduce the effectiveness of drugs, the scientist concluded.
