The preliminary round groups of the reformed Club World Cup will be drawn in Miami on Thursday. special regulations also apply to FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. Some questions are still open.
The time has come. The draw for the Club World cup will take place on Thursday evening (from 7 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). It is indeed the premiere of the competition newly installed in the calendar by FIFA. Exciting from a local perspective: two German clubs,FC Bayern and borussia Dortmund, are taking part.
A total of 32 clubs from all over the world will play for the title – and a lot of money – in the USA from June 15th to July 23rd, 2025. According to the Spanish sports newspaper ”Mundo Deportivo”, each participating team will receive a guaranteed sum of 50 million euros. According to the report, the tournament winner can even take home up to 100 million euros.
However, a few questions still need to be clarified before the competition can take place. t-online gives an overview of the current status.
The game is played in the World Championship mode for national teams. The two best clubs from each of the eight preliminary round groups advance to the knockout round. The draw works accordingly: The 32 participants were divided into four pots with eight teams each. Bayern will be drawn from pot 1, BVB from pot 2. The two Bundesliga teams cannot meet in the group phase. A maximum of two clubs from the European football Union Uefa can be in a group.
It is crucial to sort the European clubs into a ranking list. Bayern are in third place here and will definitely be drawn a club from UEFA places 9 to 12. These are Atlético Madrid, Benfica Lisbon, Juventus Turin and FC Salzburg.
As the sixth strongest european club, Dortmund will not be drawn in a group with the four best clubs in Europe.BVB does not have to fear Manchester City,Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain. The first opponent will be either Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, Palmeiras São Paulo, River Plate from Buenos Aires or Fluminense Rio de Janeiro – these are the best clubs of the South American confederation Conmebol in Pot 1.
Draw pot 1: FC BayernManchester City (England), Real Madrid (Spain), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense (all Brazil), River Plate (Argentina)
Pot 2: Borussia DortmundFC Chelsea (England), Inter Milan, Juventus Turin
The 63 games will kick off in twelve venues in the USA. Miami got the opening game, New Jersey got the finale. The Club World Cup is the country’s dress rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup, which will be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico. As the club in the opening game, inter Miami with superstar Lionel Messi from Pot 4 will definitely be drawn into position 4 in Group A.
