The president of Venezuela‘s National Electoral Council has cultivated close relationships with figures within the ruling party.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the presidential elections amidst fraud allegations raised by the opposition, who contested the results and the delay in their announcement.
The organization awarded the victory to the current president with 51% of the votes. Notably, the key operator of the electoral body, Elvis Amoroso, president of the CNE, has played a crucial role in keeping Nicolás Maduro in power.
Amoroso, born in Aragua in 1963, is a lawyer and economist by profession. He began his political career in the 1990s.
Throughout his political journey, Amoroso has maintained a close relationship with prominent figures within the Venezuelan government. He entered the Congress of Venezuela in 1993 and was re-elected in 1998 with the support of the Chavista Movement founded by Hugo Chávez.
After several political roles, Amoroso was appointed Comptroller General of the National Constituent Assembly, an institution controversial due to its unconstitutionality. In this capacity, he disqualified several prominent opposition leaders, including Maria Corina Machado.
Amoroso’s management has attracted criticism in various countries, leading to sanctions. The United States imposed sanctions on him for his involvement in electoral fraud and press censorship. Additionally, Panama classified him as a “high risk” figure for money laundering.
Despite these sanctions, Amoroso has retained his position within the Venezuelan regime.
He became president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) on August 24, 2023.
