PORTRAIT – At the end of a congress disputed until the last hours between radicals and moderates of the union, this personality still little known was designated to become the new number one.

“Unprecedented”, “very difficult”, “violent sometimes”. When taking the floor to conclude this 53rd CGT congress in Clermont-Ferrand which was held from Monday to Friday, the new number one, Sophie Binet, knows what she and the whole union have gone through during those five days that led her to become the first female secretary general in 128 years.

Extreme tension and a fierce power struggle symbolized in the latest debates within the National Confederal Committee (CCN), the body that elects the Secretary General and the Confederal Executive Committee (CEC), which proposes the candidates.

Foresighted, the organizers of the congress had decided to advance the study of applications from Friday morning to Thursday evening. Like many observers, they anticipated that this step, far from being a formality, was likely to last. Yet reality has managed to overcome fears.
