The paramilitary leader of the Wagner Group, which broke off relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, goes by the name Yevgeny Prigozhin.
He has known Putin since the 1990s. He became known for being the leader of the Concord Group, a conglomerate of several companies that offered luxury food services to Russian high society and foreign millionaires.

Prigozhin’s rise among businessmen has earned him good contracts, including with the Kremlin. Food service agreements with the Russian government also earned it a nickname: Chef by Putin.
How did Prigozhin become the leader of the Wagner Group?
He started the paramilitary group after Russian-backed separatist movements in 2014 in Donbass. Prigozhin’s aim was not only to fight in eastern Ukraine, but also to fight in all Russian-backed causes.
Since then, the Wagner Group has gained notoriety in the military field. While Russian military troops faced setbacks in battle, Prigozhin’s battles made remarkable progress.

The temperature began to rise after a paramilitary battle for control of the city of Bakhmut, Ukraine. At the time, the militiamen accused the Russian Ministry of Defense of not providing enough ammunition for Prigozhin’s troops.
Yesterday afternoon, Prigozhin sent a message to Putin. “The evil brought about by the country’s military leadership must be stopped,” he said. “They neglect the lives of soldiers. They forgot the word ‘justice’ and we’re going to bring it back. Those who destroyed our men today, who destroyed tens of thousands of lives of Russian soldiers, will be punished. Nobody resists. Anyone who tries to resist, we will consider them a danger and immediately destroy them, including any checkpoints in our path.”

The Russian government issued a statement declaring that Prigozhin’s statements “do not correspond to reality and are an informative provocation”.
Russian officials also confirmed that Putin is aware of the latest developments, and the necessary measures are being taken.
In addition, an investigation against group leader Wagner will be launched for possible incitement of a riot.
