In his first official appointment since assuming the position of the country’s new president, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian appointed Mohammad Reza Aref as his first vice president.

According to Bloomberg, “Aref is 72 years old and previously served as vice president under former reformist President Mohammad Khatami between 2001 and 2005. He was also a candidate in the 2013 presidential elections, but withdrew in favor of Hassan Rouhani, who later won.”

According to Tasnim News Agency, “Arif holds a degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in the United States, and previously served as President of Tehran University, and Minister of Post, Telegraph and Telephone in Khatami’s first government for 4 years.”

“To serve the people, we need the support and help of all Iran lovers,” Aref said in his first statement after his appointment.

On Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei announced the appointment of Pezeshkian as president of the country, after he won the early elections held following the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last May. Pezeshkian is expected to take the constitutional oath before the Shura Council (parliament) tomorrow, Tuesday, according to Agence France-Presse.
