The predecessor of the Thanh Minh – Thanh Nga opera troupe was the Hau Tan – Nam Nghia theater troupe, founded by teacher Nam Nghia. Mr. Nam Nghia is the person who was instrumental in developing the song Da Co Hoai Lang by musician Cao Van Lau to beat 8, the premise for the Vong Co verse to develop to beats 32 and 64 as it is now. But due to events, this troupe soon disbanded.
In 1949, Mr. Nam Nghia got married to Ms. Nguyen Thi Tho (who later became Tho’s wife). Initially, because his proposal was not successful, Mr. Nam Nghia composed the Vong Co song Crazy for Love and asked the radio station to record it. Pregnant woman Tho heard it, was moved, and agreed to marry him. Before moving into the same house, pregnant woman Tho had a husband and 4 children (including Thanh Nga).
Living with Mr. Nam Nghia, pregnant woman Tho gave birth to a son, Bao Quoc, in Tay Ninh. Soon after, the couple took each other to Saigon to start a business. They are all passionate about Cai Luong, Vong Co, love ancient operas and Mr. Nam Nghia himself also knows how to compose operas.
Feeling sorry for her husband who was talented but could not use martial arts, pregnant woman Tho spent all her capital and money to establish the Thanh Minh theater troupe. During this time, she continuously taught her daughter Thanh Nga about Cai Luong, looking for people to teach singing and acting.
When Thanh Nga was alive, she had both sound and color, so at the age of 16, she received the Thanh Tam award. Pregnant woman Tho saw that and immediately changed her name to Thanh Minh – Thanh Nga Cai Luong Troupe.
Thanks to her management and strategic skills, pregnant woman Tho built the group Thanh Minh – Thanh Nga to grow stronger, gathering the most famous vocalists at that time such as Phung Ha, Ut Tra On, Thanh Duoc, Viet Hung , Huu Phuoc, Ut Bach Lan, Ngoc Giau, Mong Tuyen…
The troupe performed so much that, except for Mondays off, they had to perform diligently every day, becoming a grand troupe that could compete with two long-standing famous troupes, Kim Chung and Da Ly Huong.

Also according to Huu Chau, Tho’s pregnant woman is in the style of “first ruling the family, then ruling the country”. She always said that if you can’t control your family’s children and grandchildren, you’ll never be able to control a big theater troupe. In the past, the singing troupe had to have up to a hundred or dozens of people, but she took care of it all single-handedly, leaving no room for error.
