The number of people contracting the monkeypox virus is beginning to fall. Last week 5907 people worldwide tested positive, 21 percent less than a week earlier. It’s the first drop in about a month. “This decrease may show the first indications that the number of cases in Europe is decreasing. This should become clear in the near future,” reports the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO).

The number of confirmed monkeypox infections in European countries has risen to over 20,000. The WHO and the European health service ECDC have registered 21,098 positive tests. Exactly one week ago, with the most recent update, there were 19,429 cases.

Spain has the most positive tests. Nearly 6,300 people in that country have contracted monkey pox. This is followed by the United Kingdom and Germany (both over 3300), France (almost 2900) and the Netherlands (almost 1100). The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) will release a new number of confirmed infections on Thursday. More than 500 people in Europe have been in hospital because of the complaints associated with infection. Two people have died of monkey pox.

The sexual orientation of about 9,000 people is known, and about 97 percent of them are men who have sex with men. Just over 3000 people who have tested positive also have HIV. The monkeypox virus has been diagnosed in more than 200 women.
