WHO predominantly advises against treating Covid sufferers with the blood of convalescents

Dhe World Health Organization (WHO) has advised against the treatment of Covid patients with plasma from the blood of convalescent in most cases. In an article published in the British Medical Journal on Tuesday, the WHO stated that treatment in people with mild or moderate corona disease does not “improve survival” or reduce the need for artificial ventilation according to “current knowledge”. In addition, it is “costly and time-consuming”.

The WHO recommended that treatment, even in patients with severe and critical illness, should only be given as part of a clinical trial. Accordingly, the WHO researchers had evaluated the findings from 16 studies with a total of 16,236 patients with mild, severe and critical Covid 19 disease.

Treatment with the blood plasma of recovered patients was one of the therapy methods that researchers had pursued in the early stages of the pandemic. The idea is that the liquid part of the recovered blood contains antibodies to the coronavirus that could help the sick person’s immune system fight the infection.
