Following the emergence of a new variant of monkeypox, the World Health Organization has declared an international health emergency. Cases have now been reported in 13 countries on the African continent, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This comes after 15,000 cases and 461 deaths have been recorded in Africa so far in 2024 and, according to the organization, the spread of a new variant within Africa, which has been declared more lethal, has not been reported. In addition, this declaration is made to avoid outbreaks in other parts of the world.
