WHO says coronavirus pandemic will end in 2022

The coronavirus pandemic could end this year if the authorities of the countries take comprehensive measures to combat the virus, said the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the 150th session of the WHO Executive Board.

“If countries make full use of all these strategies and tools, we will be able to end the acute phase of the pandemic this year. We will be able to end COVID-19 as a global health emergency,” Ghebreyesus said (quoted by RIA Novosti).

He noted that in order to end the pandemic, 70% of the population of each country, especially at risk groups, must be vaccinated against the coronavirus. We also need to reduce the death rate from the virus through effective clinical treatment, ensure equal access to oxygen, antiviral drugs and diagnostics. The virus needs to be closely monitored to monitor the emergence of new strains and to change public health and social measures as needed, Ghebreyesus added.

In Russia, over the past day, 65,109 cases of coronavirus infection have been detected – the maximum for the entire period of the pandemic. The incidence has been growing in the country since January 11 against the backdrop of the spread of the omicron strain. In Moscow, an anti-record has also been set – 19,509 cases of infection. The level of herd immunity in Russia is 64.4% against the target of 80%.
