Heat-related mortality has increased by 30% in 53 European countries over the past 20 years. The rate is increasing in almost all countries in the region where monitoring is conducted, Hans Kluge, director of the European Bureau of the World Health Organization (WHO), said in a statement, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

According to his data, in 53 countries of the region, more than 175 thousand people died annually due to heat in the period from 2000 to 2019. Globally, this figure was about 489 thousand people, with Europe’s share being 36%.

Temperatures in the region are rising at about twice the global average, with the three warmest years on record occurring since 2020 and the 10 warmest since 2007.

Kluge reminds us that “extremely high temperatures exacerbate chronic diseases, including cardiovascular, respiratory and cerebrovascular diseases, mental health and diabetes-related diseases.” The WHO employee recommends that risk groups keep their homes cool, stay in the shade when going outside, avoid physical activity during the hottest part of the day, maintain fluid balance in the body, and refrain from drinking sugary, alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.
