WHO wants swift action to tackle consequences of lung Covid

by time news

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wants action to be taken quickly against the long-term effects of Covid infections (lung Covid). According to Ghebreyesus, lung Covid is destroying the lives of tens of millions of people and causing great economic damage.

Worldwide (so far) about 600 million people have been infected with the virus. The WHO estimates that 10% to 20% of survivors suffer from symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath and cognitive dysfunction in the medium and long term. Women are more likely to suffer from those conditions. Such numbers have a huge impact on health systems and economies.

According to Tedras, countries should prepare action programs as soon as possible that include at least the following: “immediate access to antivirals for patients at high risk of serious disease, investing in research and sharing new tools and knowledge to treat patients more effectively. It also means supporting the physical and mental health of patients and providing financial support to those who are unable to work.”
