“This is something we should all be concerned about. The potential spread of the disease in Africa and beyond is a major concern,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus. At the beginning of the week, the spread of monkeypox was declared a public health emergency by the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an agency of the African Union, because more than 500 people infected with this disease have already died in Africa this year. The agency informed that monkeypox was registered in 13 countries of the continent this year. More than 96% of cases of illness and death are recorded in the Congo. This year, compared to the corresponding period last year, 160% more infections and 19% more deaths were registered. This year, the total number of registered cases of infection in Africa has exceeded 14 thousand, 524 infected have died.

In 2022, the WHO already declared a global emergency due to monkeypox, as cases of the disease were detected in more than 700 countries where it had not been recorded until now. Six cases of infection with monkeypox were registered in Latvia in 2022, the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control reports.
