The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over the rapid spread of the infectious disease MPOX in the Democratic Republic of Congo, warning that it could soon pose a danger to the entire world.

The WHO specialist, Rosamund Lewis, has expressed worries about international transmission of the MPOX virus, stating that the disease is already spreading rapidly in Congo and outbreaks have been reported in several Asian countries. With more than 13,000 suspected cases and over 600 deaths, the situation in Congo is becoming increasingly dire.

According to Lewis, for the first time, more women than men are infected in the affected areas, with the connection being tied to sex work in Congo. The WHO has sent a team of experts to the Central African country to address the epidemic.

MPOX, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that can be transmitted to humans from infected animals. While most cases are milder, severe infections can lead to death. Typical symptoms include fever, skin pustules, and swollen lymph nodes, among others.

The WHO has declared an international health emergency due to the spread of MPOX. Since May 2022, the disease has spread outside of Africa, particularly in Europe, leading to more than 92,000 cases in 117 countries worldwide. The number of reported cases has recently seen an increase, particularly in Asia, with the WHO working diligently to develop a vaccine.

With the ongoing threat of MPOX and the continued mutations of the coronavirus, global health officials are closely monitoring the situation, urging for international cooperation and response to contain the spread of these infectious diseases.]
