The world of regional Mexican music is in mourning after learning the news that the corridos tumbados singer, Jesús Nolberto Cárdenas Velázquez, known artistically as Chuy Montana, was found dead on a highway in Tijuana – Rosarito, in Baja California, this February 7th.

His label Street Mob Records confirmed his death with a statement issued on social media.

“On behalf of Street Mob Records, we are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague and brother Chuy Montana. We sympathize with his family during this time of grief. “We kindly request understanding and respect from the media at this difficult time,” they wrote.

According to the first police reports collected by the media ‘Punto Norte’, it appears that the 25-year-old singer had been kidnapped by a group of armed men, possibly linked to drug trafficking cartels.

It is presumed that the singer would have resisted the kidnapping and tried to flee from the vehicle in which he was being transported. In addition, the criminals shot him multiple times in his arms and in the back of the head, according to authorities reports. At least five bullet casings were found at the crime scene, which shows the violence of the event.

Who was Chuy Montana?

Chuy Montana was just starting his musical career in the corridos tumbados genre. He was mainly known in Tijuana, however, he also made appearances in San Ysidro, a city in the United States that is close to the border crossing.

While making a presentation he managed to attract the attention of Jesús Ortiz Paz, the vocalist of Fuerza Regida, who invited him to be part of his record label.

Montaña’s music stood out for fusing contemporary rhythms with traditional Mexican sounds, which made him a unique figure in his genre. Specializing in corridos tumbados or belicos, a regional Mexican musical subgenre, Chuy Montaña earned the affection and admiration of a wide audience.
